The Window

The Window 16“ x 12”I have always loved the window in my house, with the early morning the sun shining through. It simply makes the room glow with all the reflections from the sun catchers I had placed there over the years.
It is not easy to portray sunshine in oil paint, as a matter of fact it can be very frustrating to get that contrast just right. The point is to somehow portray the joy that these simple things in life can bring, even more than to be technically accurate.
As with The Window, Summer Shade focuses on sunshine and reflections,16“ x 16”I have done several paintings that celebrate the sunshine, and it it is a recurring theme in many of my works, whether it is a cat in the sunshine or a figure with shadows playing in dappled sunshine on the table…it is always that feeling of happiness that sparkling light inspires! It makes me want to pick up a brush and paint it!
The window and the painting have  inspired me to make some of these sun catchers of my own, using gemstones and crystals, and presenting them as a collection of jewels for the home. I think that we all need a little boost sometimes, and when I see something beautiful I get a thrill of joy that can change my whole day.
I want to either create it in color on a canvas, or create it with the elements of color that gems and crystals give us. I  have been studying the energetic properties inherent in the stones and I have started another blog website called gemmasgemstones.com where I discuss it. I feel it is another aspect of creating , kind of like painting in three dimension.
The best part about the window in this painting is that every morning it is a spontaneous explosion of color, and that spontaneity is what makes life so interesting…each day is a new one, each morning a celebration !

Crystals and their interesting healing aspects

necklace-and-earring-set-rock-crystal-dangles-silver-accents-crystalI’d like to talk about crystals and their interesting healing aspects, to continue my discussion on gemstones and crystals .
Quartz is used for transformation in healing and in all levels of change (mentally/emotionally, physically and spiritually). One of its interesting healing properties is that it stimulates the natural crystal in body tissues and fluids to resonate at the highest healing frequency.
Crystals of pure quartz, generally six-sided, can be found in all shades and colors. Quartz crystals grow singularly or in groups and take on different shapes according to the temperature at the time of their formation.
Here is some history on Quartz (SiO2): it is considered to be solidified light and oxygen. Quartz encompass a large family of stones and crystals, all of which are made up primarily of silicon dioxide, one of the most common and most important substances in the world.
Quartz has long been a crystal recognized for its interesting healing aspects, and  was occasionally used in Egypt where turquoise or other stones were not available.
The word originally came from the Greeks who called it Krystallos or ice, believing it to be a hardened form of ice. Later the word was applied to all forms of crystal.
Technologically Quartz has aided the advancement of man in radio transmitters and computers, and of course batteries.
In general, clear crystals are free of color vibrations, precisely because they are colorless.
In healing , clear or Rock Crystals, as they are referred to, can be used to amplify the effects of any other stone or any other healing modality that you are using by stepping up the the energy, and bringing clarity to the situation
Clear Quartz: is thought to amplify both body energy and thoughts.
Here it can be recognized for its interesting healing aspects, and was said that it can assist in the creation of power, clarity of thinking, meditation, cleansing, clearing the aura, spiritual development and healing.
Clear Quartz is considered the “stone of power”. A dedicated healer. Pure white light passes through it easily, leaving all the colors of the spectrum unaltered and giving substance to the argument that Clear Quartz crystals can help balance all the elements needed to make us whole and fulfilled.
For more info on these wonderful crystals and their interesting healing aspects, take a look at :
Edgar Cayce, called “The Sleeping Prophet” because of his trance readings for the purpose of healing people, recommended that they be used for purification of the blood and spirit.
He said as follows in one reading:
“as to the elemental influences having to do with the entity’s experience- we find that the crystal as a stone or any white stone, has a helpful influence. …not as a”good luck charm” but these vibrations that are needed as helpful influences are well to be kept close about the body.”
So basically, he is saying that it is a physical vibratory rate and it can effect the physical body by it’s very presence and proximity to the body itself. It isn’t a talisman, it is more like an instrument.
I think that all these energetic modalities, whether it be through color, gemstones, minerals, or crystals deserve some space in our panorama of perceptions and alternative healing methods. I think at the very least they can be considered as an addition perhaps to the bag of tricks we all use to heal and feel better already. I would like to talk more about color and personality in my next blog,
thanks for reading this!
All the best ,

How do color and healing properties relate to gemstones?

What is the relationship between the gemstone properties of energy and healing and the actual color?
You may or may not believe there is a relationship at all,  or perhaps you think that it is only a preference for color that draws one to the particular gemstone or jewel.
Here are some interesting ideas on this subject:
Edgar Cayce was was a famous American psychic healer and was called “The Sleeping Prophet” because he would go into a trance and speak in depth on many subjects like medicine and “vibrational healing” .
He said in trance”…just as there is an aura when a string is vibrated- the tone is produced by the vibration. In the body, the tone is given off rather in the higher vibration, or the color. Hence this is a physical condition that exists with each physical body.”
He also said ” We know that all force was created by vibration. We know that all vibration becomes electrical in it’s action and it’s effect. That is, it enlivens, brings greater vibration, or being under vibration it becomes deadened or destructive to one or the other of the vibrations thus met.”
What does this mean? It means that we are all made up of vibration atoms and photons, and we all have a vibratory rate that is subject to outside influences.
I think that since color is a vibratory rate of a short or long wave-length it follows that things of color influence us in some way.
Metals, gems, and stones each have a unique properties and unique vibrations about them. The idea is to find the one that can help you with what you need to transform.
Gemstone healing works in this manner: you bring the stone, or metal, or gem in to your own subtle energy system.
When you do that, because your body is very responsive, your energy system will begin to emulate or imitate the vibrations being given off by the item you work with.
When you change the vibrations, you change everything. Any condition, whether emotional or physical, has to change when you change your vibration.
Here are three very common gemstones and their various healing properties according to Edgar Cayce and Shelly Kaehr,PH.D,  who compiled a book on Cayce’s information on gemstones called “Edgar Cayce’s Guide to Gemstones, Minerals, Metals, and More”
Garnet: Garnet refers to the entire family of minerals that have an aluminum silicate base. They vary in color ranging from red to green , depending on the mineral base.
Since the Middle Ages, garnet has been known for curing illnesses of the blood and infections. The red color represents passion, not only between lovers, but passion for life and all of your endeavors. If given as a gift, the garnet represents commitment to the relationship, and ensures long lasting love and fidelity.
Emerald: The oldest known mines for emeralds come from Cleopatra’s mines in southern Egypt. Emeralds have captivated people for thousands of years–they were one of the precious stones used in the Taj Mahal. The emerald is not as commonly found as one would think, and perhaps it’s mystical allure is partly because of it’s rarity. It is one of the most powerful for physical healing.
Any green stone provides healing for the body, but the emerald is especially so because it carries the properties of the green ray, which opens the heart center.
If your heart has been broken in the past, it will ease you into healing so that you can love again.
It can be utilized to help with heart ailments such as congestive heart failure and restricted arteries. Green stones are also utilized for any painful conditions, such as arthritis and cancer.
Sapphire: This gem is a member of the corundum family of minerals. Blue is the color most often associated with sapphires, but it is also found in colors like yellow, white, green, pink and brown.
The blue, which is the most popular kind, is the carrier of the blue ray, which activates the throat–for expression, and provides peace and tranquility for the planet. It assists people in relieving anger, depression, hopelessness, and deep feelings of sorrow and guilt.
Sapphires can be utilized in self healing to calm nerves and bring restful deep sleep.
There is much more to be said about these healing properties of gemstones. I hope you have found this bit of information interesting and perhaps even useful.
I will continue this discussion on color further with how colors interact with one’s personality.
Thanks for reading this!
All the best!

What Color Are You Today?

There has been much information on color and its influence on people.

As and artist, I am very interested in color, and I would like to share some of the more surprising things that my research into the deeper aspects of color has revealed.

Some of this information was synthesized from the book What Colour Are You? by Annie Wilson and Lilla Bek. They had some very important insights in bringing the scientific information on color together with spiritual awareness through yoga.

As you may know, color is light broken down into different wave-lengths and thus different vibratory rates. Every color sends out a vibratory rate of either higher or lower vibrations, that very quickly creates the sensation of warmth or coolness.
Red has the longest wave-length, and the slowest vibrational rate and gives the warmest sensation.
Violet has the shortest wave-length, and the fastest vibrational rate, and gives the coolest sensation.

Theo Gimbel was a leading light researcher in England in the 1980’s, and brought the importance of color in hospitals and even prisons to the punlic eye.
http://www.colour-experience.org/colouriser/colour_therapy/therapy_8.htm

In his explanations and affirmations based on his research, he suggests that the density of red restricts its mobility, and thus slows down its vibratory rate. Warm energies have the slowest wave-length and have the greatest power to stimulate.
Blues on the other hand opens and gives a feeling of space.

In past centuries the principals of color were known through out the world and utilized by various civilations.
The ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, China, Tibet, and the native American Indians were more in contact with their bodies and their energy centers within and had an inner knowing of the uses of color.

The Ancient Egyptians had healing temples of color and light, and they had special sanctuary rooms in which deep blue, violet, and rose pink were used .
I think that we recognize color all the time, even if unconciously. We we accept their qualities without thinking.
We somehow know the emotional qualities and even use expressions like “seeing red”, “feeling blue”, “green with envy”, being “in the pink”, having “golden moments”–all connecting specific emotions with a specific color.

Theo Gimbel has studied the effects of color on specific illnesses, and has concluded that combining shape and color benefit certain ailments or general well-being. For instance, asthma, tension, and insomnia have all been helped by the blue spectrum. (violet, blue, turquoise) and lethargy and lack of vitality have been helped by the red, orange, and yellow spectrum.

Most allopathic medicines tend paralyse the nervous system in order to silence pain in one particular area. As we all know, this is simply a removal of the symptoms, and not a cure. Gimbel had worked with doctors in the US and Germany back in the 1980’s and felt that color could be used as an auxilliary to medical treatment.

We have 7 energy centers in our bodies that relate to the 7 colors in the light spectrum. These centers are called chakras, and each one has an important function and reflects a specific quality.
Violet is the color of the crown chakra at the top of the head. This is the link to the higher realms. It is where art appreciation, religion, and beauty reside.  It indicates our sense of the good and the beautiful in our lives.
Indigo is the color of the brow chakra, and it reflects the right brain, where intuition resides.
Blue is the color of the throat chakra, and it reflects the ability to express oneself and ones’ emotions . It is where we seek to express wisdom.
Green is the color of the heart center or chakra, and it reveals how we relate to people and to nature. It reflects our emotional life. The heart is the center of the soul and it is the heart that makes us human.
Yellow is the color of the solar plexus , the center of our state of mind and how we see life intellectually. It reflects the left or the rational side of our brain, and logic. When we cannot sense things through love or the heart, we sense things through the stomach.
Orange is the color of the digestive center and reflects the ability to project and process energy for use by the top centers of the body listed above. If this malfunctions we have all manner of digestive problems. Orange signifies the movement into action.
Red is the color of the energy chakra at the base of the spine, and this reflects the sexual and fire energies of our whole body.

I would like to take this discussion further into the effects of colors in gemstones and their general energetic properties in my next blog, thanks for reading this! I hope I have shared some interesting thoughts about colors!
All the best till next time,

Gemma

Energetic Jewels and Colors

Energetic Jewels and Colors

Harmony in Green

I have always been greatly influenced by color..and I think that is one of the main reasons that I paint and create jewelry. I can revel in the colors and experiment with their mixtures and nuances…its a joy, in a word!
I, like many people these days, am getting very interested in alternative healing and vital in general.
And I do know that color does affect one’s feelings, moods, and emotions, although often in a subconscious manner..
As you may already know, colors are certain wavelengths of electro-magnetic energy seen through our eyes. The color we see is the part of the visible spectrum that is reflected back by a certain object, and every color has an energy property and vibratory rate.
Colors have a symbolic meaning which is immediately recognized by our subconsciousness. It must be said that not all colors mean the same to all persons and all cultures.
They influence the flow and amount of energy in our bodies.
When designing the jewelry and putting colors together for instance, in my Harmony Collection, I have used several color pallets for specific energetic purposes: some of this information comes from Color Therapy – Chromotherapy

Each color group effects certain energies:
Green:
Healing properties: Green is the color of Nature and the earth. It is balance and harmony in essence and possesses a soothing influence upon both mind and body.
Blue:
Healing properties: Blue is cooling, electric, astringent. Dr. Edwin Babbitt, in his classic, “The Principles of Light and Color,” states that “The Blue Ray is one of the greatest antiseptics in the world.”
Indigo:
Healing properties: Indigo is a great purifier of the bloodstream and also benefits mental problems. It is a freeing and purifying agent.
Indigo combines the deep blue of devotion with a trace of stabilizing and objective red. Indigo is cool, electric, and astringent.
Violet / Purple:
Healing properties: These are colors of transformation.  They heal melancholy, hysteria, delusions and alcohol addiction and bring spiritual insights and renewal. These colors slow down an over-active heart; stimulate the spleen and the white blood cells (immunity). Bring sleep. Soothe mental and emotional stress. Decrease sexual activity. Decrease sensitivity to pain. They help in detoxification.
Leonardo da Vinci proclaimed that you can increase the power of meditation ten-fold by meditating under the gentle rays of Violet, as found in Church windows.
Orange
Healing properties: Orange is warm, cheering, non-constricting. Orange has a freeing action upon the body and mind, relieving repressions. Orange shows new possibilities and other options in life. Stimulates creative thinking and enthusiasm, and helps assimilate new ideas.
Taking color a step further and adding the properties of gems and crystals , I believe you have a very interesting and powerful means of changing the energies. Here are some of the metaphysical properties according to Beadage
Aquamarines
Metaphysical Properties
Aquamarine is said to do many things metaphysically; it is often thought of as a universal sign of hope, health, and youth
This beautiful stone is supposed to help with anxiety, fear, and restlessness by creating a peaceful stillness like the flow of a forest stream.
Wearing Aquamarine earrings is said to bring love and affection
Amethyst
Metaphysical Properties
Amethyst – increases vivid dreams, relieves depression, promotes calm, serenity, and spirituality. Helps with addiction and stress.
Fluorite
Metaphysical Properties
Fluorite (multicolor) – enhances spiritual energy work, focuses the will and balances the psyche.
Topaz
Metaphysical Properties
Topaz – soothes physical pain, promotes peace and calms emotions, as well as promoting forgiveness. Promotes individuality, self-confidence, and creativity. Counteracts negative emotions.
I mentioned only a few of the properties I have found, and think that by combining the colors and the stones together, I believe you can have a powerful assistance in changing your energies. Of course theres the added plus of a beautiful jewel to wear as well! Or the other way around if one prefers!
For some of my healing energy jewelry, see the Harmony Series
and the Jewelled Medallions on this page:
